Markus Willeke

An equally powerful and precise kind of painting is typical of Markus Willeke. Frequently, his approach to painting occurs very directly, without any detours or corrections, as a risky undertaking that evokes an almost violent visual effect. Markus Willeke’s paintings are distinguished by a calculated interplay of painterly energies – his spectrum ranges from extremely sharp details to a furious, very liquid, colorful painting, which, like an avalanche, carries every object along with it.

Markus Willeke’s major sources are scenes from films, as well as comics, record covers, and other visual material, and their transformation into paintings always conveys a great deal of tension and menace. Even apparently innocent motifs, such as an American school bus or a boarded-up window, carry messages of unpredictable experiences, which put the viewer into a state of heightened alertness. The »boarded windows«, on one hand, create a sculptural effect, and on the other – as visual obstructions – they deny any sort of spatial illusion; most recently, the »boarded windows« have been rendered as large murals.

Despite the menace lurking in his paintings, the works also display features of self-reflective painting, created by the combination of different levels with which Markus Willeke is always experimenting. Evidence of this, for instance, are his tattoo paintings, which turn the sculptural nude back into the second skin of an inky blue drawing, or his »window drawings«, which depict simple figures: a grim girl, a little king, a death’s head, or the paw of a predatory animal appear on the blue surfaces as if they had been painted on a fogged window by a child. The »window drawings« show that Markus Willeke does not need precisely detailed depictions to create visual illusion, but rather, just the opposite: the illusion is based on rapid, extremely succinct painting.
