Jan Ros

From 28 April to 24 June 2023, the gallery is showing new paintings by Jan Ros in a solo exhibition entitled »INSIGHT OUT«.

City, architecture and space – these are the main themes of the Dutch painter who has been part of the gallery's programme for more than 15 years. Using photographs as source material, he transforms them into multifarious paintings mainly oriented toward space and object, but which also engender abstract passages defined entirely by color. He switches the degree of acuity and path of movement depending on the subject, modeling sculptural volumes out of broad brushstrokes, and working with stencil-like inserts and sharp contours that stand out from their painted surroundings like cut-outs.

His repertoire includes city views and famous modernist, International-style buildings, as well as images of cars and airplanes, of gas stations and transit terminals, that remind of scenes from a road movie. However, he never depicts the hectic bustle of urban life, but the silence and emptiness of deserted places without ever showing a human being.

In addition, the interaction of light and shadow, of inside and outside plays an important role, especially in his paintings of windows, which feature views of urban panoramas and thus expanding the viewer’s real space through the imagination. Moreover there are depictions of glazed staircases and empty vitrines, with which the artist explores various states of transparency and visibility in painting.

The exhibition opens on Friday, 28 April 2023 from 6 to 9 pm in the presence of the artist.
