Liam O’Callaghan
Der irische Künstler Liam O'Callaghan arbeitet in den Bereichen Skulptur, Fotografie sowie Licht- und Sound-Installation. Bestimmt wird sein multimediales Werk durch formale Experimentierlust, ein spürbar individuelles Materialverständnis sowie eine Tendenz zu hybriden, humorvollen Konstruktionen.
Ein Haufen benutzter Radiergummis auf einem Wandbord, eine sprechende Skulptur aus rosarot gestrichenen Holzstäben oder eine auratische Lichtprojektion, die auf einer Ansammlung profaner Autospiegel beruht – auf diese und andere Arbeiten trifft zu, was der Künstler selbst wie folgt formuliert: »My work comes from the need to make pieces that are more of a free flow of creativity, focusing on the physical pleasure of making, something that is rough in aesthetic where you can see the thinking of it’s maker, something that is freer from the limitations I put on myself, that is simple in thought, but unashamed, confident and honest, work that is about possibilities, that is an attempted manifestation of the importance of freedom and the action of an expression (…).«
Um Möglichkeitsformen (und physikalische Grenzen der Realisierung) kreisen auch seine fotografischen Serien »Designs for Public Monument that won't happen« sowie »Temporary Compositions for an Empty Space«: Während der Künstler hier einfache, plastische Konstruktionen unter Einsatz frei fließender Farbe in miniaturhafte Modelle für öffentliche Denkmäler verwandelt, sind es dort labile Anordnungen von Baumaterialien, Spiegelflächen und Möbeln, die er durch Konstruktionslinien auf der Fotografie zu perspektivischen Studien verdichtet.
Unter dem Titel »made to make do« präsentierte die Galerie Arbeiten von Liam O'Callaghan in einer ersten Einzelausstellung in Deutschland im Herbst 2009. Zudem realisierte der Künstler eine Sound-Installation aus skulptural manipulierten Plattenspielern, die anlässlich der Teilnahme der Galerie an der PREVIEW BERLIN im Flughafen Tempelhof vorgestellt wurde. 2015 fand eine weitere Einzelausstellung statt, für die Liam O'Callaghan einen raumgreifenden Loop aus schmalen Holzleisten sowie eine neue Sound-Installation aus gestapelten Lautsprechern schuf.
